Alex Hurt spoke to Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart in the House of Commons about problems faced by youngsters with the condition.
Alex was one of more than 200 young people at the event organised by charity Diabetes UK.
Alex, of Smithall Road, Beverley, was diagnosed with type-one diabetes a year ago.
He said: "I had a really good day going down on the train and seeing Big Ben.
"I think more needs to be done in school.
"Sometimes I forget to have a snack, so it would be nice if a teacher would remind me."
Alex has just started at Minster School in Beverley.
His mum Sarah said: "Minster School has been good, but I think there does need to be more awareness generally at schools about diabetes.
"I think the youngsters sent a clear message that schools need to be more aware and have a better understanding about what children with diabetes are going through."
According to Diabetes UK, some children face struggles including not being allowed access to snacks during class – which can be vital in managing their health – and not being allowed on school trips or being kept out of lessons unnecessarily.
Alex was joined on his visit by 12-year-old Daniel Allison, of Beverley, who also has diabetes.
Mr Stuart said: "Alex emphasised the need for training of teachers to improve their understanding of diabetes.
"Many children with diabetes need support, whether it is giving them their snacks, assisting with injections, keeping spare supplies or making sure they are okay.
"Not receiving this support can affect children's access to education and their ability to learn.
"Daniel told me his experience with diabetes has been great so far, but it is clear this is not the case for everyone.
"Not all children with diabetes need support in school, but those who do should be able to get it."
Mr Stuart said he will ask the Department for Children, Schools and Families what it intends to do to ensure all children get the support they need in school.
